Week 11 (07/06/2022)

Project 2: Sense of Place

Reference:
fig 11.01: screenshot of exporting pictures to app

I decided to add some pictures on it, to make a little picture wall on the school building. I use a mobile phone app to add the polaroid look on every picture.

fig 11.02: quote written on my exercise book

It is a short and simple quote written by my teacher few years ago, but I still can't forget it and keep it in my room. It is simple act but motivates me a lot. Thus, I included it in the drawing, as it is one of the thing that supported me all these years.

Final outcome:
fig 11.03: final outcome of project 2

Then I placed the picture at the left wall of the school building following the three point perspective, by slightly distort the pictures. In this final outcome, I also added a little details in it, as I wanted to let the school building remains simple and clean. I drew a few of my friends in the building, looking joyful and exciting. The whole image is full with happy memories. My friends, classmates, teachers, every person I met in school, are precious to me, I cherish everyone of them. They supported me, helped me whenever I'm in need, accompanied me whenever I need. They are the reason I always being positive, and motivated while study. I am very grateful that I'm in such a positive and motivated environment.

Next, I also added my class sign on the wall, I chose the class in year 6 as it is the last year and also the year I took the final and most important exam, this is the year where I being started to be kind of different from the past, I am more mature and hardworking than the past years, I also started to do math more which I literally avoid it every year and failed. Last but not least, I wrote my teacher's quote for me on the building. I was very grateful as every teacher I met there, really care about their students, and I really appreciate that. Why the quote is meaningful for me? I was thinking to give up in his subject, as it is quite hard for me, but he never fails to motivate me and taught me patiently.

Principle of balance can be found in this piece, as the elements are placed in balanced weight both left and right sides.

Reflection:

During week 11 is basically we all attended a talk/lecture by a Professor of Practice from Hong Kong to share about “Inequality”. It is a topic which closely related to our final project. After the lecture, I also sent my work to Dr.P through teams, in order to collect some feedbacks for improvement.

Week 10 (31/05/2022)

Project 2: Sense of Place

1st attempt outcome:
fig 10.01: outcome of project 2

The artwork above is the outcome, I'm using three point perspective to show the hugeness of the school. While the girl (which is me as a student), was sitting on it and looks way more bigger than the building. My secondary school is like a support for me, I think it is the place that's changed me and made me who I am now. The girl looks very happy, as I was very happy during those days. I spent 6 years there, for me this place does have an amount of room in my life. I think for now as a 1st year uni student, 6 years in secondary school is the place that made most memories for me. The teachers and friends I met there are genuine and pure, the relationship bonded with all of them is pure and precious. After I graduated, I went to work in a few place and found out the pure relationship in secondary school is even more previous and priceless/invaluable. It is a place where I can be myself. It is a place where brings comfort for me.

Lecturer's feedback (in week 11):
I suggest to add a little more elements on the school building that could link to making sense of the meaning between school and you.

Reflection:

During week 10, we have a consultation session. I got to receive some feedbacks from the lecturer, and also found out the problem I'm facing. Message of the artwork is really important, need practice to question myself, what is the meaning of it? why I included this element but why not that? what is the specific reason? Concept and message always come first. I think I need to improve myself in terms of explaining the artwork, and put message, stories in the artwork, but most important is to link all the messages, stories together. The bridging part is important too.

Week 9 (24/05/2022)

Project 2: Sense of Place
fig 9.01: final idea sketch

After the feedbacks session, I decided to use this idea. Then, I made some changes on it, I removed the unnecessary elements and slightly adjust the right leg to a more comfortable posture.

Reflection:

During week 9, we have a consultation session for previous project and also a briefing for this current project 2 : Sense of place. At first, I am kind of confused regarding the project, after going through the research and reconfirm from the lecturer and classmates, I have a rough idea on what I wanted to go for.

Week 8 (17/05/2022):

Lecture 7: Sense of Place

Observation is important when it comes to design. Being observant means to be attentive to our surroundings, to pay attention in every details. For a designer, observation can be an effective way to get idea.

Sense of place is being observant and sensitive to surroundings, the lecturer also provided us an example in Instagram (Island Bazaar). For this current project, we will need to observe suitable design principles to create effective visuals.

I love how mix medium expresses the message and art. I also love the surreal collage method, it looks interesting.

These are some designs that I didn't approach before, it's like a minimalist graphic design with lesser vibrance in color. I feels it more harmony, comfortable and soft.

fig 8.10: Patchwork City 71 Collage by Marilyn Henrion

This is a patchwork found from online, which I really attracted from while I am doing visual research. I think it's interesting and oddly aesthetic. It's like combining different pieces of building into a image.

Project 2: Sense of Place

Reference for idea sketch:
fig 8.11: Tsun Jin High School taken by myself

I decided to include my high school where I studied for 6 years. It is the place which brings a lot of memories. It also changes me who I am now. Friends and teachers I met there also changed me a lot.

Project 2 idea sketch:

fig 8.12: 1st idea sketch

My first idea sketch basically is drawing my school as a chair, and I am sitting on it. It's in a relax posture, showing it's my comfort place and a place that I found myself. In the sketch I originally added my school bag and stack of textbooks on the bottom, to show the daily basis and scenery which will appears in my class. After the feedbacks session, I removed the unnecessary elements.

fig 8.13: 2nd idea sketch

My second sketch is drawing a few places but the school will be the main point. It's like an idea same as a game which have a small town. This is like my own little town with places I love the most, the places created most memorable memories for me, place that changes me and so on.

fig 8.14: 3rd idea sketch

This is a simple concept inspired by the artwork I researched from Pinterest, it's a Japanese minimalist style. It is the structure of the school with simple lines.

Lecturer's feedbacks (from Week 9 feedbacks session):
1st design have the unnecessary elements below (bag and books), is there a specific meaning in it why the elements are there. Simple design doesn't means not good and complex design doesn't means good design. Only include the things that's meaningful, and have message in it. The message of the art is more important than the visual.

For the 2nd design, need to work on how to explain why these place are included in the 'town' I designed and wanted to brings out.

Reflection:

While doing the visual research, I explored quite much of artwork that I didn't approach before. I found it quite interesting, and I think I should explore more, as art has unlimited possibilities. Never stop trying and observing. The idea sketches I did also is the style that I didn't try before, it's challenging but also fun.
