LECTURES

fig xx: week 1 briefing pdf
During the 1st week, Mr. Martin brief us what are the task we will need to do throughout the semester. Then, we are assigned to do some preparations/ research for the final project, and some editing exercise.
Week 2/ Framing & Storyboard
05/09/2022
Cinematography
-A film is made up of many shots
-Each shots requires placing the camera in the best position for the moment
-Shot: a continuous view shot without interruption
-Sequence: a series of scenes/ shots
Shot Size
Shot size determines how large the area that’s visible within the frame.
fig xx: shot size
1. Extreme wide shot: shows a broad view of the surrounding and covey scale, distance, and geographical location.
2. Wide shot: includes the entire subject in the immediate surroundings. It is called an “establishing shot” if it’s used at the beginning.
3. Medium wide shot: shows a character’s half body. It is wide enough to show the physical setting, it permits a nice balance of figure and surroundings.
4. Medium shot: shows the subject that are important to understand (ex: gesture, expression)
5. Medium close-up shot: subject character from approximately midway between waist and shoulders to above the head (closer than m.s.)
6. Over the shoulder shot: shows the subject from behind the shoulder as another person /a third-party.
7. Close-up shot: used to isolate the most important part of the subject. It emphasizes facial expression, details of an object.
8. Extreme close-up shot: it magnifies a detail, the object is to focus on important detail either to increase the drama or allow the viewer to see necessary picture information clearly.
Camera Angle
Composition: rule of thirds divides the frame into thirds both horizontally and vertically.
Subject angle
Facial modeling is best when the subject is turned 45degrees to the camera. Angle the camera so that parallel lines diminish and converge preferably toward the right.
Subject height
Eye-level angle is from the observer perspective
Low angle is any shot in which the camera is tilted upward to view the subject. It can make a character look bigger, stronger or more noble.
High angle is any shot tilted downward to view the subject. It can make a character look smaller, younger, weak, confused or more childlike.
Screen direction
Dynamic screen direction: ensure the screen direction consistently depicts subject motion in one direction only.
Static screen direction: the camera stay on a horizontal axis and not cross sections. The horizontal axis is called “line of action”
Week 3/ Storytelling in Film
12/09/2022
1. Story: The set of all in cause-effect relationship in time and space. (what happened?)
2. Plot: Everything visibly and audibly present in the film. (why they happened ? and how?)
3. Plot Segmentation: A scene-by-scene outline of the film, the best method for understanding a film's narrative system.
4. 3 Act Structure: Setup/ Introduction > Confrontation of a problem > Resolution of problem

Exercise 2 progressions:
fig 03: week 1 exercise 1 progressions
This time the footage sequence are not in order, so we need to arrange them by ourselves.
fig 04: editing exercise 2
Week 2 (05/09/2022): Editing practice
1. Editing Practice 1(Lalin)
Progressions:
fig 05: rename the footages
Before starting to trim the footages, I refer to the storyboard and identify which footage is which shot, so when I edit can easily find them and arrange them in sequence.
fig 06: add sound effects and graphics
fig 07: add sound effects and graphics
After the trimming all the footages, and arranged in sequence. I added the graphics and sound affect given referring the original Lalin video (the speech bubble and notification sound), due to some of the footage are missing compare to the origin, so some of the speech bubble may unable to insert, so I just pick some to fit the story flow.
fig 08: add BGM
Then I realized the footage origin audio is quite noisy, so I muted the whole audio and added a soft BGM from online.
fig 09: Lalin editing exercise
1. Watch <Lalin> & <Guang>, break it down according to 3 Act-Structure
fig 10: 3 act-structure exercise
Week 5 (26/09/2022): Storyboarding & floor plan exercise
fig 11: storyboarding exercise pdf
Progressions (audio sync):
fig 12: trim and sync the audio
After trimming out the unwanted part, I delete the original audio and sync it with the mic-recorded audio. The method I use to sync the audio is just manually matching it with the audio.
fig 13: adjust DB
I adjust the db to make it slightly louder.
Final outcome:
