Importing the footage, arranging the sequence, adjust the size.
fig 02: shooting exercise editing

Adjust the brightness, contrast, saturation, highlights, shadow, and so on,  as some of the clips may have overexposure.

Then, I add some transitions between each clip.

After adding the BGM, I added a fade-out for the ending of the music. Then, I add captions for each clip, adding transitions for it too.

Drafts:

At first, I chose 3 songs and was not sure which to go for so I find some references from YouTube and TikTok for these 3 songs ( Taki Taki, Chicken Noodle Soup, and Uptown Funk). Then, I roughly made some drafts in InShot to decide which to go for.

Finally, I decided to choose Chicken Noodle Soup and made a final draft before the shooting, to make sure what scene and shot I need to prepare.

The song was chosen: Chicken Noodle Soup by j-hope (ft. Becky G.)

Video length: 45 secs

Shot Sizes:
1. Wide shot - high angle
2. 3 single full-body shots - eye level (split screen)
3. Medium shot - eye-level
4. Medium close-up shot - eye-level
5. Close-up shot - eye-level
6. Extreme close-up shot - eye-level
7. Wide shot - low angle

Progressions:

fig 11: edit audio

After downloading the song, I trimmed the unwanted part and left only the 45 secs part.

fig 12: MOV to MP4

Due to the file format from iPhone being MOV, which Premiere Pro can't support, so I uploaded all the footage into Media Encoder to change them to MP4.

Then, I started to trim the videos and arrange them in sequence. I also need to check whether the footage matches the audio.

fig 16: split screen

After the arrangements and trimming, I crop the video to achieve the split screen as per assigned for the exercise. My groupmates helped out to dance the chorus part.

fig 17: adding texts

I added the title of the song at the start of the video and added some shadows to make it more visible.
fig 18: changing tints

I changed some of the footage's tints to make it more colorful and interesting.
fig 19: adding transitions, effects

I also added some effects and transitions to make the video more fun. I changed the overall video to a more green hue and higher temperature.

1st attempt outcome:

During week 4, I received some feedback from the lecturer, overall the editing it's fine, just need more close up/extreme close-up/ medium close-up shots will be appreciated, even just appeared few seconds. Then, I decided to shoot some footage to insert into the video.

Progressions for 2nd attempt:

fig 21: adding transitions, effects

After importing the new footage, I added them above the original video and reduced the opacity with some little effects. As I don't want to extend the video length as it may be too boring.

2. Lalin ripple edit to 30 secs

Progressions:
fig 23: ripple editing

Using ripple edit as instructed to shorten the video from 1 minute plus to 30 secs sharp. After shortening it, also need to adjust the BGM and sound effects to match the video.

Week 7: Color correction & grading (Lalin and Production Shoot)

1. Lalin

Lalin color correction progressions:

fig 25: color correction lalin

Following the tutorial video given, need open the Lumetri scopes as guidance to adjust the white balance. The upper part is the whites and the lower part is the black, as per the video the best to maintain white at 90 and black at 10.

fig 26: color correction lalin

Can use the dropper tool and pick the brightest (pure white) area of the video to auto-adjust the white balance.

fig 27: color correction lalin

Because the contrast and overall color of the original video are softer and have less contrast, to adjust it, I mainly edit the contrast and saturation.

2. Production Shoot

Color correction progressions:

Editing progressions:

fig 30: production shoot editing

After color corrected all the footage, I deleted all the original tracks from the video, and add a BGM instead. Then, I manually chose the audio recording that I wanted to use and placed it in between some videos, to make the trailer look.

fig 31: production shoot editing

After adding the BGM, I tried trimming the shots and footage to slices and trying to match with the beat.

fig 32: production shoot editing

Then I purposely leave some gaps between some of the footage to let it show a black screen and add the audio. To match the SUS vibe, I added dip black effects as some of the transitions.

fig 33: production shoot editing

Then I decided to add subtitles for the voiceovers by referring to this tutorial video for the latest version of premiere pro.

fig 34: production shoot editing

After the captions are generated, I still need to edit some of the words and spelling as it's not really accurate. Then, change the font, and so on.

fig 35: production shoot editing

Then, I added some zoom-in and out effects for some footage to make it more interesting.

fig 36: production shoot editing

After all the captions, effects, colors, and sequence are set, I checked again if the BGM matches and fit with the scenes, I trim some of the parts and mixed different BGM parts together, using constant gain to smoothen it out.

REFLECTIONS

Personally, quite enjoy editing videos, but the time is too limited and most of the things are learned from YouTube tutorials. I think the production shoot and MV are quite fun. After this assignment, I realized premiere pro is better than after effects, it's more user-friendly. For the color correction part, I had faced some issues because of my laptop, it has poor color accuracy and color gamut, hence when I edit in my laptop it will look different compare to desktop or any other device, hence I need to keep changing my device to edit the colors.
