Week 3 (26/01/2023)

EXERCISE 4: Motion pie chart

fig 08: task instructions

Progressions:

fig 09: pie chart progression

By following the tutorial video given, I got to know how to create a basic animated pie chart.

fig 10: adjust colors and keyframes

After the tutorial, I start to customize the colors and keyframes as I wanted them to appear in a different timeline.

fig 11: add percentages and arrows

I tried using the slide control for the percentage, unfortunately, it can't work for decimals. Hence, I just go for the normal effect. (this is the tutorial video I discovered and found quite interesting).

fig 12: add a list

Lastly, I added a list to show what the colors represent.

EXERCISE 3: Kinetic Typography

Progressions/ Distribution:

After discussing the art direction, colors, fonts, and so on, we started to distribute the lyrics after proposing our idea to Mr. Martin.

Each of us will need to animate 4-5 lines by following the fixed color schemes, and fonts.

Kinetic typography first draft progressions:

fig 14: visual element progression

At first I wanted to add a licking lip for the lyric 'taste', but ended up not working and also don't know how to animate a licking lip, so I keep it simple instead.

fig 15: arranging the timeline

After confirming the font and colors, I started to arrange the timeline to match the song. Then, I animate it one line by one line.

fig 16: speed graph

I edit the speed graph to adjust the speed of the animation.

fig 17: add visual elements

I wanted to make a splash cream for the 'cake', so I followed this tutorial (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEWZH9PwNe0&t=262s) to make the splash effect.

EXERCISE 5: Vector/ Character Animation

Tutorial progression:

fig 19: scale

Bounce effect using the scale tool (0%>105%>100%) for the middle character.

fig 19: vector to shape

fig 20: wiggle expression (alternative of rotation)

fig 21: puppet pin tool

Demo outcome:

Exercise (B) progressions:

fig 23: ungroup and organizing layers

Separating and organizing the objects into different layers.

fig 24: scale

Scale for the angpaus and coins to make the bounce effect from the box.

fig 25: wiggle expression

Use a wiggle expression for the waving pose.

fig 26: float expression

I Googled for float expression to make repetitive floating for the clouds.

FEEDBACKS

Week 3 (26/01/2023)
(First draft & art direction for the Kinetic Typography)
The art direction is fine, but the composition for the 1st draft needs to fix a little, and consistency of usage of punctuation.

Week 4 (02/02/2023)
(Kinetic Typography)
Overall it's ok, just need to maintain the consistency of usage of motion blur, the 'drop drop' composition needs to fix a little, chorus part of the line needs to adjust the opacity.
(Pie chart)
Let the last frame stop a second because there is too much information to read and slow down the arrow a bit.

REFLECTIONS

Personally quite enjoy doing motion graphics, so I found it quite fun for project 2. We tried different kinds of motion graphics, for example, lyric videos, charts, and an animated CNY poster? Overall, its quite fun, and learned a lot, just the shortage of time, hence, a lot of things need to rush, can't really focus on or give full effort to one specific exercise.
