LECTURE

Week 01 (10/01/2023)
During the first week, the lecturer briefed us on the module information and what we will need to prepare for this semester. Then, we had a short lecture about "Culture, Design & Research".

We learned about the design system, and Ms.Anis also gave a few examples for better understanding, for example, the ladybug as a symbol of luck, and breaking it down into basic assumptions, norms and values, and artifacts and products.

INSTRUCTIONS

Module Information Booklet:

For project 1, we need to distribute into groups, 6 members each. After forming a group, we had a quick meeting to discuss the ideation. We had a few ideas for the project, Baba Nyonya culture, Indian piercings, Different cultures' wedding gowns/ marriage culture, wayang kulit, P.Ramlee's film art style, Lat's (Kampung Boi's author) comic art style, kolam/ Rangoli, and mural art in different states. We were aiming for a topic that is more accessible for us, where we can conduct on-site visits, face-to-face interviews, and on-site investigations.

PROPOSAL

Progressions:

1st PPT:

fig: proposal

First, we were assigned to prepare a proposal, with 3 different ideas. We came out with one main theme, wedding culture. Then, we were divided into 3 groups, and we work in pairs to research about three different races' wedding cultures.

Final proposal:

After discussions and suggestions given by Mr.Asrizal, we decided to focus on songket patterns. Then, we come out with 3 different ideas to showcase songket patterns/ for this topic.

DATA COLLECTION

Progressions:

We had a meeting to discuss the distribution of data collection tasks, as we have a few data collection methods that will be carried on, watching documentaries, surveys, interviews, and field visits. Each of the pairs started to prepare the questions and so on. I and Hoi Yee will be doing the Google Form surveys, we first ask the public about what they know about Songket, then dive into their interests in it, then survey about the preservation of Songket, what they think about modernized Songket.

We received 32 responses so far.

FINAL OUTCOME

Motif design progressions:

After discussions, we decided each of us design 1 motif for the projection, but we will distribute based on motif style, flora, fauna, and kuih muih (geometry). I chose tepung talam, like a more geometric style to focus on.

I tried out a few arrangements and ask my groupmates' opinions then make further amendments and move on to digitizing in AI.

The designs are based on the kuih muih style, they are all inspired by the traditional cakes from Malay Culture.

I mostly use shape, direct selection tools, and pen tools to create more clean, repetitive, and consistent patterns. After creating one motif, I create the pattern in AI and applied it to a rectangle shape.

This design was based on the kuih called aneka and tepung talam, and then I simplified it a bit for the middle red ones and added colors so it looks like hibiscus at the same time which is our national flower.

Trailer progression:

First, I choose a few videos and photos from the shooting and trim the part I wanted, but then I realized putting photos might be weird, and due to the shortage of time, I focus on the videos instead. As for the trailer, I tried to remain shorter and straight to the point, so I didn't really include all the videos we shoot in the photo studio. After choosing and trimming the videos, I chose BGM for it. The BGM is called Keep Going by Simon Wester. I mainly edit the video to match the BGM, as I thought that matching with the beat and rhythm will be more attractive and comfortable to watch. I mostly cropped out their faces to let the audiences focus on the patterns and outfits instead.

FEEDBACKS

Week 01 (10/01/2023)
Mr.Asrizal: For the wedding dress idea, we can make comparisons between different cultures, for the art style, as one is a film and one is a cartoon, is hard to make comparisons, unless finding out one film which has similar messages to comics.

Ms.Anis: Can try to combine different cultures' wedding gowns design, for example, the motifs on the dresses. Do more research on it, and don't come out with the final outcome first, because sometimes during research you might find out a more decent and fun way to present that kind of culture.

Week 02 (17/01/2023)
Ms.Anis: Do more research first, then see what you can do based on the research. Break down the ideas according to the design system.

Week 04 (31/01/2023)
Prefer the 1st idea (immersive projection) and 4th idea (animated poster, the one with the radiation). Overall done quite well. Move on to the decision-making, data collection, and technical research. If want to do the immersive projection can just use the normal projector.

REFLECTIONS

At first, I was quite lost what to do, then after a few discussions and meetings, me and my groupmates finally have some ideas on what to do for the project. During the discussions, all of us gave a lot of fun and creative ideas, we jot all down and chose only three for the proposal, but in the end we all love the wedding culture idea so much, so we use this as the main theme and research on three different races' wedding culture instead. At first, we wanted to do Chinese, Malay and Baba Nyonya's wedding culture and make comparisons, show how the two races influence Baba Nyonya's culture and wedding dress design style. In the end, we focused on Malay's instead after proposing the idea to the lecturer. I think it's quite fun to do the "low budget" immersive projection in campus, although it's not really a immersive screen but the effects are still there, at first I hope to create a room with projectors, but after asking Ms. Anis suggestions, it's best to just use one projector and show the effect only, due to shortage of time and we also don't have the equipment. Through this project, we get to know more about Malay's traditional culture, especially in Songket Patterns. We get to know in depth of the progressions, motifs meaning, and so on. We used a more modern method to showcase the beauty of traditional patterns, to attracts people attention, as songket are expensive and people nowadays don't really use it anymore. Hence, we thought can use immersive projection to let the people see it actually looks great on your own outfit too, basically it's a combination of modern and traditional elements.
