Project 1: Character & Background

Week 4 (25/04/2023)

Project 1 (Progression 1) - Character Design

Character name: Bailey (a.k.a the beanie)
Gender: Female
Age: 12
Description: She is not confident because of her kinky hair, so she always wears a beanie to school. She loves to dance and is talented, but she doesn't have the courage to perform in front of people.

Research/ Progression:

Outcomes:
fig: character design

The 1st one is Bailey with her beanie on, and the 2nd one is her without the beanie. The proportion idea is more like a "dumbbell", which has a bigger top (head) and bigger bottom (the feet), as I wanted to emphasize her hair and beanie. For the color scheme, instead of choosing either a cool or warm tone, I chose to combine both, to show that she might be cool on the outside, but she has a very passionate and warm heart inside.

As in the story, Bailey loves to dance, so I focus more on dance poses.

Colors:

Outcomes:

First version:

fig: 1st version

I chose purple color as I though that a primary school might have some more vibrant colors overall, but then I still feel it was a bit off. After the feedback from Mr.Kamal, the ceiling's color is weird, then I found out I used color dodge instead of overlay, which has a huge difference in the vibrancy of color.

Final Version:

fig: final version

I changed to a less vibrant color, and it looks more decent and comfortable to look compared to the purple color scheme.

FINAL FINAL VERSION:

Made some changes to the cabinet and trophy at the left as per feedback, as the previous version looks flat, hence I added more depth.

FEEDBACKS

Character design
1st draft:
Prefer the taller ones, as the proportion looks more like a child and realistic.

2nd draft:
Doesn't looks like a girl, try to do more research and add more girl elements to emphasize it.

Layout design
1st version:
The ceiling's purple is too bright. Just one character is needed in the layout.

Final version:
The colors are much better.
The cabinet on the left too flat, add more depth and shading.

FINAL FINAL VERSION:
OK.
