Task 3
PROGRESSIONS
Task 3:
Produce rapid prototypes, test, and iterative designs.
For this task, my role is to work on the pitch video. After the shooting, I tidied up all the footage and arranged it by scenes and shots. Then, I edit the timing, cuts, and transitions to ensure the story flows smoothly and is amusing at the same time. The idea for the cuts leans towards a comedic and funny approach.

We initially had two storyboards but were unsure which one to use for the videography part. One was a sink story and the other was a microwave story. Both required VFX, but the shots were not hard to take, so we shot both stories. I edited two versions of the video and showed them to my groupmates and the client. The client preferred the microwave story, so I continued to edit that video further.
fig: progression check with the client
For the meeting, we mainly show the app wireframe progress and pitch video progress, asking for their opinions and feedback.
I was trying to color grade the footage to a cooler tone, and mysterious lighting (which is higher contrast, shadow, lower whites, and higher blacks), as the raw footage is very desaturated and low vibrancy, I also adjusted the colors, to make it richer.
fig: adding VFX
Next, I worked on the VFX for the electric shock. I started with simple lines, then added more effects to create inconsistent line widths, wiggle animations, and roughened edges to make it look more like electricity. I then animated it based on the movement of the character, trying to animate as inconsistently as possible, since it would look less convincing if the keyframes were too consistent.
fig: glow effect and more variations
To make it more realistic, I added two layers of glow effect on the main electric, and then added some smaller strokes of electricity around it, so it looks 'messier' which represents more like an electric shock.
fig: sound effect
After finishing the videography, I moved on to the sound effects editing, I layered different electric shock effects and adjusted the EQ & pitch to make the sound richer. As the audio in the original footage is not that good, too much noise and we don't have a proper mic to record the ambience and sounds. I used online resources instead and edited the timing, and pitch to match the scenes (for example, microwave open and close, room ambiance). I added a piece of very subtle background music too, to make the scene more contrast and less boring, the BGM tends to be more casual and warm, in contrast with what was happening during the electric shock.
Then, of course, after showing the final results, there are some amendments in terms of timing and cuts, hence I repeat the same steps until I finally have the final version. As shown below:

I followed the brand colors and fonts to do the text and layout, then I started with simple animations like how the text comes in, and the flow, utilizing a speed graph to adjust the taste of the animation.

REFLECTIONS
Experience
For this task, I focused more on the video itself. After planning the shots and finding color and lighting references, we conducted the shooting on campus with the help of Jordan as our main character and Justin as the contractor. The shooting went smoothly and happily. We shot two stories, so the post-production was a bit time-consuming as I needed to edit two versions and wasn't sure which one to go for. To save time, I did simple cuts and roughly checked how the story flowed before adding all the effects and color grading. In the end, the client chose the microwave story, which I personally liked as well. It had a greater variety of shots, and faster-paced cuts, and was more fun to watch. I enjoyed doing the effects as well.
Observations
I observed that I personally like to edit videos and tell stories using timing, cuts, and transitions. I always try to learn how to use these elements to tell a story without explicitly narrating it. For this project, I wanted to make it funny and amusing, so I needed to edit the rhythm of the story flow and arrange the cuts accordingly. It was fun for me, and I enjoyed doing that. Although there were many final versions with continuous amendments and re-renders, I honestly enjoyed doing video editing, VFX, SFX, and animations.
Findings
At the same time, our UI/UX and graphic design team worked hard on the wireframes and social media. We asked for suggestions and discussed our progress in the WhatsApp group to keep everyone updated. This collaborative approach was essential in ensuring that all aspects of the project were aligned and progressing smoothly. In conclusion, I was learning and enjoying at the same time, there are still so much more space for improvements in my video editing and animations.
