PROGRESSIONS

Exercise1:
Identify the Affordances, Signifiers, Mapping, and Feedback for A Mobile App

For this individual assignment, we were assigned to make an individual report for a personal helper app, based on the affordances, signifiers, user journey map, problems it attempts to solve, and feedback.

To be honest, this app is new for me, as I don't really use any personal helper apps, hence I installed and signed up for the app just to try it out, I started with some background research on the app and company, then I briefly go through how the app works. Then, I marked down the main/ key functions of the app, then dived in more, for example, going through all the icons. As this is a UX analysis, I tried to record more on my user experience side, what and how I feel while using the app, and at the same time analyze the UIs too. Throughout the analysis, I took some screenshots and circled the parts that I wanted to highlight in terms of their affordances, signifiers, and feedback.

During the first presentation, we all realized that 'feedback' in UX design means the responses or reactions provided by the app to the user's actions, for example, when you have completed a payment/ transaction the app will notify you that the payment is successful by sending emails/ pop-up window/ notifications. Before the lecturer explained after the presentation, we assumed that 'feedback' meant our own feedback towards the app's UI/UX and suggestions for its improvements.

After the presentation and feedback from our lecturer, we amended our own PowerPoint slides and showed them to Mr. Hiijaz.

Exercise 2:
Analysis of UX Design

For this exercise, we were assigned to do a UX design audit of an app by visiting a physical establishment and using their app. The study involved the student (myself) downloading and thoroughly testing the app as a new user, by visiting the shopping center to evaluate if the app is useful for a shopper and adding value for the company.

I chose MY TOWN KL app, although I've been to the shopping mall I never used their app, hence I took this opportunity to try out their app.

Same as exercise 1, I did some background research on the app, installed, and signed up for the app, I tried to list out their main functions and their objectives. Then I visited My Town and tried to use their app, for example, collecting points using the QR scanner in the app, and taking pictures of my receipt to record my spending in My Town. Then, I divided the functions into good and bad UX design aspects, unfortunately, this app gave an overall bad user experience, but Mr.Hijjaz said I could proceed to do this app's analysis although it's really bad, hence I just continued doing the analysis.

REFLECTIONS

Experiences
Throughout the UX Design module, I engaged in various exercises that deepened my understanding of UX principles. These included analyzing a personal helper app and the MY TOWN KL app. By working on these real-world examples, I was able to immerse myself in the user experience and apply theoretical knowledge practically.

Observations
During the analysis, I meticulously observed and identified key UX elements such as affordances, signifiers, mapping, and feedback within each application. I learned to differentiate between feedback given by the app itself and my own personal feedback. This process required close attention to detail and a nuanced understanding of how these elements impact the user experience.

Findings
The hands-on approach revealed both strengths and weaknesses in the design of the apps I evaluated. I gained valuable insights into what contributes to a user-friendly experience versus what makes an app challenging to use. The exercises underscored the importance of thorough testing and careful observation in designing effective and engaging user experiences.
