LECTURES:
Week 4: Adjustment Layer & Filters
Adjustment Layer
fig xx: adjustment layer
Adjustment layers is a non-destructive image editing tools that can add color and tonal adjustments to the image without permanently changing its pixels.
fig xx: adjustment layer
Adjustments that can be made:
1. Brightness/ Contrast
2. Level
3. Curves
There are filters to change color, add blur or create completely new image effects.
2. Create fake reflection
3. Experiment with simple portraits and details textured
4. Convert your results to Black & White
5. Work with silhouette
6. Pick two random photo
7. Make simple objects look fascinating
8. Use Shadow
Blend modes
Final outcome:
4. Exposure
5. Selective Color
Filter

Week 5: Double Exposure
Double Exposure
Double exposure photography refers to merging multiple images. The goal is to make them surreal, emotional, or humorous.
1.Tilt-Shift Effect (go to Filter > Blur Gallery > Tilt-Shift)

fig xx: blend modes
1.Select the Layer 1 (Fire) to be on top of the Background (Musicians)
2.Go to the Blending Modes option
3.Select “Screen”
As a result, all of the pixels on the fire will be selected as Screen blending mode.
Week 6: Photo Manipulation Ideation
Photo Manipulation
Photograph manipulation involves the transformation or alteration of a photograph using various methods and techniques to achieve desired results.
Week 9: Digital Surrealism
Surrealism
Surrealism defies logic. Dreams and the workings of the subconscious mind inspire surrealistic art.

Mindset During Creation:
1. "Does this look real?"
2. Make it happen to the best of your ability.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Project 2A: Double Exposure
Exercise:
fig xx: double exposure tutorial progression
Firstly, we traced the model using "Quick Selection Tool". Then, using "Select and Mask" to refine the edges and create a new layer with mask.
fig xx: double exposure tutorial progression
Next we added the elements given, using clipping mask. Using paint brush to smoothen the edges.
fig xx: double exposure tutorial progression
Finally adding a "Level" adjustments layer and added a layer with " Gradient Map" to make the image more interesting.

It is a combination of moon, mirror selfie and my self-portrait. It’s like I see myself in the reflection at the same time the reflection reflects myself seeing the reflection. It shows like there are two me, reflecting ourselves, I think I have two different “me-s” in myself, I can be very positive, happy, active, extrovert but sometimes I can be depressed, negative, sad. I think it is normal to allow yourselves being different sometimes, you may be tired of being happy and allow to be sad too. You are the one who controls you, you are the one who you see in the mirror. The moon means out of space, people are allowed to be imaginative and unrealistic sometimes, as you may find yourselves there and comfort.
I changed the skin color into a darker tone, to make it more natural.
Trying out some other colors for the background and fur to make it more interesting.
I used the darker brown color tone as the skin color, same as the hair color and eye brow color. The overall skin and hair color is dark brown, thus I changed the eye color to brown too, to match the overall image tone. The nails color, I added a little blue tone instead of staying as white so can be more natural.
The final outcome I use a more saturated and vibrant brown color as the skin color. Next, I also added a little more red on the lips. I changed the background to a lower saturate toned green-ish color, so it can make a contrast between the background and the subject. Lastly, I added a hint of purple on the nails, the nails' layer doesn't allows to add more vibrant color, it only will change a hint of the color (maybe it's because of the original b&w picture on the nail is not that contrast.)
These are some of my idea sketches, I mainly play around with the similar shapes, example: rectangle and circle. The 2nd sketch (the green ones) is one of my favorites, as I love the combination where the "hole" of the mosquito killer placed at the middle of the canned pasta sauce.
Project 2C 1st attempt progressions:
Lecturer's Feedbacks:
I found some pictures with people lifting a bigger size dumbbell. I think the 3rd picture have higher resolution and lighting. Thus, I chose that to do the 2nd attempt.
But I founded out pizza is quite thin to be the dumbbell, not too match with the bell. Hence, I decided to use doughnut.
I use quick selection tool to select the parts that I wanted, and mask it out.
Same as above, I used quick selection tool to trace the subject out.

Final Outcome:
fig xx: Project 2B Hearst Mansion final outcome
Following the instructions taught by Mr. Martin, first use quick selection tool to mask the subject out (me myself), then adjust the colors, contrast and saturation to match the background. Next, making the reflection by flip it horizontally, darken the image, add a little effect on it. Last but not least, adding shadows by using brush tool then blurred it, reduce the opacity to make it more blend into the background.

I chose this photo from the Google Drive given, whereas the skin color and hair color reference is from Google.

I chose these colors by using the eyedropper tool.
1st attempt:
fig xx: Project 2B Hearst Mansion 1st attempt
Lecturer's feedback:
The skin color is less saturated, and also the background have too vibrant color which cause the skin looks even more less saturate, the lips also need be more saturated. Besides, the nails can try to add color instead of white.
Final outcome:

Lecturer's Feedbacks:
Lack of interesting idea, need to explore more. It is just matching the shapes.
fig xx: oilment cap trace
fig xx: oilment cap trace
fig xx: outcome of oilment cap with palm size dumbbell
Both dumbbell and oilment cap pictures are taken by mobile phone at indoor. Using 'Quick Selection Tool' to trace the cap. Then using eraser to remove the exceeded part.
Looks weird, since the cap on the right side shouldn't be the same side with the left ones, should be in opposite side. The lighting and angle also bad, advisable to take the picture near window ,use the natural sunlight. Besides, the ratio is weird, doesn't show the dumbbell is bigger than the cap size. Try find a better dumbbell pictures.
fig xx: more pictures of dumbbell from online
After the feedbacks, I search for more dumbbell pictures. Then ask lecturer for opinions, these pictures are still can't show the size comparison with the oilment cap. It's better to find a picture with something around.

I decided to combine either pizza or doughnut with the dumbbell.
fig xx: pizza reference from online
fig xx: donuts pictures taken indoor with natural lighting
I took a few angles of the donuts to match the angle of the dumbbell, these are the pictures I chose out of 50+ pictures. Then I proceed to Photoshop to mask the donut out.

fig xx: adjust the colors, saturation, contrast...
After positioning the donuts, I add adjustment layers (clipping mask) to adjust the contrast, saturation and so on of each layers, in order to match the overall colors.
fig xx: adding shadow
Next, I used brush tool (black color), to add shadow of the subject. As the lightning is coming from the left, the shadow will be lie under the subject right bottom. I reduced the opacity and also added blur effect on it, so it won't looks so hard edged.
Final outcome:
fig xx: final outcome
The idea is combining dumbbell with donuts, it's like visually express how 'heavy' are the calories in the donuts. I chose a more colorful donut so show it more obvious and donut-ish.
REFLECTIONS:
In this project 2, we created 3 artworks. Firstly, it is double exposure which is my 1st time to create it. I think it is a very interesting technique to create a self-portrait too. Next, recoloring a black and white image also is my 1st time trying out, I didn't know that there is a way to make a black and white image turn into a colored image. Last but not least, it's interesting to learn creating surreal image in Photoshop, I usually seen them in online only, and it's real fun to try it out by ourselves.
