SUBMISSIONS:

Exercise 1.1: Contrast
Week 1 (29/03/2022)

fig 1.01: final outcome of Contrast

I applied the principle of contrast for the artwork above. The message I wanted to deliver besides contrast and also the idea of being yourselves even you are different with others. Heading to an opposite direction doesn't mean you are in the wrong path.

Principles used: Contrast, Repetition

Exercise 1.2: Gestalt Theory
Week 1 (29/03/2022)

fig 1.02: final outcome of Symmetry

I applied the law of symmetry & order from Gestalt Theory for the artwork above. The finger symmetry idea was inspired by the app Photo Booth. I found that the form and shape of the symmetry of fingers is similar with the face of a fox or any animal that the viewer can imagine.

Principles used: Symmetry, Balance, Harmony

Exercise 2.1: Balance
Week 2-3 (05/04/2022 - 12/04/2022)

fig 2.01: final asymmetry balance

The sneaker is the dominant object of the artwork as it has a more vibrant color and detailed, while the deep blue sea creates a lesser focal point to form asymmetrical balance.

Principles used: Asymmetry balance, Contrast, Movement

Exercise 2.2: Emphasis
Week 2-3 (05/04/2022 - 12/04/2022)

fig 2.02: final emphasis

The grayscale background gets to create emphasis on the character with a big smile. Repetition also applied in this work, as the background is full with repetitive words.

The background full with my name in my own handwriting, every word is different as I wrote them one by one, it shows that I am a quite capricious person.

The character's left hand was 'bleeding' with colors as I am left-handed, who loves drawing. The colors is mainly in yellow and orange which symbolize happy, positivity and sunshine.

Principles used: Emphasis, Contrast, Repetition, Movement

Exercise 3.1: Harmony
Week 3-5 (12/04/2022 - 26/04/2022)

fig 3.01: harmony final outcome

I chose this beige and green palette as the main colorway for this artwork, as it gave me a warm, soft and harmony feel. I arranged them with more spaces so it does not looks too intense.

Principles used: Harmony, Repetition, Similarity

Exercise 3.2: Symbol
Week 3-5 (12/04/2022 - 26/04/2022)

fig 3.02: symbol of hope final outcome

I mainly used the warm color tone, which are yellow, orange and red because it is the most common colors for the Gladiolus flower (which symbolize hope), and it also symbolize positivity.

Principles used: Symbol, Contrast

Project 1: Self-Portrait
Week 6-9 (03/05/2022 - 24/05/2022)

fig 4.01: self portrait final outcome

It shows the endless perspective and view people have, I think is what creates the world. Hence, the combination of both my friend's perspective and mine.

Firstly, the top part with a "universe" coming out from my head, it shows I am a imaginative person in my friend's perspective. Whereas the scribble on my head also shows the stress I have, and being so overthinking all the time.

Next, the middle part I placed a buttercup flower on my mouth, it represents hope and joy. The bungee jumping silhouette in the middle, is the activity I wanted to try since I was in kindergarten. I used to be a adventurous person when I was little and always wanted to try some extreme activities, but my parents being quite protective to me, so I didn't manage to try any of it. Hence, it drives me being more curious and desire to do so.

Last but not least, the socks on my shirt, shows contrast between the black & white image and the colorful socks. It is one of my favorite thing when comes to styling outfit, socks will always be my favorites. It also shows the contrast of the impression from my friends to me and how I think myself. I can be positive sometimes, but also often feels depressed.

Principles used: Contrast, Movement

Project 2: Sense of Place
Week 8-11 (17/05/2022 - 07/06/2022)

fig 5.01: final outcome of project 2

I'm using three point perspective to show the hugeness of the school. While the girl (which is me as a student), was sitting on it and looks way more bigger than the building. My secondary school is like a support for me, I think it is the place that's changed me and made me who I am now. It is a place where I can be myself. It is a place where brings comfort for me.

I drew a few of my friends in the building, looking joyful and exciting. The whole image is full with happy memories. My friends, classmates, teachers, every person I met in school, are precious to me. I also added my class sign on the wall, I chose the class in year 6 as it is the last year. Last but not least, I wrote my teacher's quote for me on the building. I was very grateful as every teacher I met there, really care about their students, and I really appreciate that.

Principles used: Balance, Similarity, Hierarchy

Final Project: Visual Analysis
Week 10-14 (31/05/2022 - 28/06/2022)

I chose "unrealistic beauty standards" against women. For example, fat and ugly people often be treated rudely, people will make fun of them, even don't want to talk to them or be friends. Whereas, people which is more beautiful and nice in body shape will be more welcomed.

People would lack confidence and be obsessed with trying to live up to the beauty ideal. For instance, losing weight is a never-ending quest and people will never think it's enough. This could lead to diseases like anorexia or extreme plastic surgery.

The "trend "will slowly destroy /erode the person personality and even make them forget them who they really are.

fig 6.01: final outcome visual analysis

fig 6.02: final outcome <The Beauty>

Firstly, the pear represents women, the hand gesture is like molding a clay, same as the social issues I wanted to deliver about, the beauty standards are stressing out the women, it just make women even more stress, depressed, so the pear is like slowly distorting until a shape that a normal pear doesn't have.

Next, the background is the Instagram layout. People tend to post only "beautiful" pictures on Instagram, so everyone on social media trying to achieve the same goal, such as slim, and fair skin. Hence, I purposely chose it as the background, to tell people you didn't need to follow the trend to be "beautiful' on social medias, the most important is how you see yourself.

Last but not least, the detail for the layout. The caption of the post is "STOP THE HATRED" and it is 1000 years ago, to show that this social issue against women last for a long time, even after 1000 years the issue still persist, shows that the society actually didn't improve much.

A pear may not have the shape and skin that is perfect but it's always delicious inside. Find the beauty of the inner side instead of the outer.

Principles used: Emphasis, Contrast, Word and Image, Hierarchy

FINAL REFLECTIONS:

Throughout this whole module, I learnt how to apply the message in the artwork ( still have so much to improve and learn). During the feedbacks sessions, I realized how important it is about the story and message behind the artwork itself, without it the artwork is just a visual. To be honest, I have no basics in drawing/ designing, everything it's drawn based on feelings and researches. For this module, instead of learning the fundamentals on how to draw, it taught us the principles, and how to apply the message inside the artwork. I enjoy the design part the most, as the lecturer gave us a lot of space to be creative and flexible, so everyone is doing different things in a different way, and I think it it quite interesting. I didn't know that I can write this much to express myself at first, and I also didn't know I can try some styles that I didn't try before, it's fun to explore different styles in order to develop my own style. I honestly hope that I can learn some fundamentals during the 1st semester of main core. Overall, I quite enjoy the flexibility of this module, and I learnt quite much.
